Measuring Heat Inside Pistons

An ingenious system is adopted in some overseas automotive plants to measure approximately the heat developed inside a piston while an engine is running. Thermo-couples are employed for ascertaining temperatures in stationary parts of an automobile power unit, but for those moving at an extremely rapid rate this method in most instances is impossible.

The easiest solution of the problem has been found in the use of specially developed paints which, when certain heat is attained, change colour. Different mixes of paint are utilised to give various readings. Thus, if the interior of a piston is painted with two strips or dabs of these paints and one changes colour and one does not, the temperature can be estimated within certain limits.

With three different paints the heat can be calculated even more accurately.
