BIG ATTENDANCE TO R.S.A. TOURNEY
Although there were other diversions bowling was the main business at the annual returned soldiers “tin. hat” tournament held on the Whakatane Bowling Club greens on Sunday. Old diggers and kiwis making up 23 teams attended from all parts of the Bav of Plenty and made the gathering an outstanding success. Some very good trophies donated by different Whakatane business firms were keenly competed for, most games producing a very high standard of bowling. The wmning team was Dr W. S. Wallis (skip), R. Pringle (three), S. Kingsland (two), W. McHale (lead). The runners-up were G. Latta (skip), A. Bui'gess (three), H. L. King (two), G. Howat (lead). VETERAN’S TOURNAMENT The veterans championship went away to a flying start on the Whakatane Bowling Club’s greens on Saturday. Some say that bowls is an old man’s game. Well it may be as the combined ages of the twelve players entered totalled 856 years. R. F. Smith and H. A. Burgess are the only two lifers left in after three rounds of play and the one lifers are J. Rutherford, G. Caisley, C. N. Chamberlain and W. G. Howat.
