BAY OF PLENTY LOSES TO POVERTY BAY

With the exception of the men’s singles when they won only three of seven games Poverty Bay proved far too strong for Bay of Plenty and retained the Reid Cup when they won'' a representative tennis match at Opotiki during the weekend by 23 games to nine. Pilbrow lost to Miss Bayliss 2/6. ST GEORGE’S WINS BAY C GRADE FINAL Following their defeat of St Michaels at Rotorua on Saturday by 11 games to six. St George’s, Whakatane, have now become the holders of the Pritchard Cup, awarded to winners of the C grade competition throughout the Bay of Plenty. Sh George’s won the Eastern Bay of Plenty section and drew to play St. Michaels, who were the finals in the western section. Throughout this season St. George’s have been playing consistently good tennis.

MATATUA MAORI TEAM FOR GISBORNE

The selector, Mr P. Howell, has chosen a strong team to represent Matatua (Whakatane) Maori Tennis Association in the game for the Morehu Turoa Shield with the present holders, Takitimu (Gisborne), at Gisborne on Saturday. Most players, especially the men have had much experience and Mr Howell, who is also playing manager, has expressed his confidence in the team. Even if it does not win the trophy he expects Takitimu to be fully extended. Matatua won the right to challenge Takitimu for the Shield after defeating other Maori tennis associations in the Bay of Plenty.

The bus leaves at 10 a.m. Saturday. Any supporters who wish to go are asked to contact Mrs P. Howell.

MAORI TRIBAL GAMES TO COMMENCE

Eastern Bay of Plenty Maori tribal tennis associations commence play in senior grades for the Wilson Cup on March 4.' Six associations have entered and with the continued improvement noted in Maori tennis throughout this season some top class tennis is expected. The draw for the first three games is:—

/ Rangitaiki v Ruatahuna, Whakatane v. Tuhoe, Whakatohea v Waimana.
