Railways Staff Circular Litters Post Office Floor
Scattered torn pieces of a railway circular urging “young mdn with ambition” to choose a career in the railways littered the footpath and floor of the private box lobby at the Whakatane Post Office on Friday. Apparently quite a number of people did not appreciate this effort on the part of the Railways Department to recruit more staff because the rubbish box at the post office also held a pile of the circulars. In itself the circular was quite a neat job and painted a job in the railways in glowing terms with a promising future using such phrases as “security at all ages, safeguards at all stages.” Photographs of railway men at their different jobs, details of each position such as pay, a brief outline of the work and possibilities of prpmotion take up the greater part of the 12-page booklet. Although chiefly a publicity stunt to attract more staff the circular also gives some interesting information The railways is the largest business organisation in the Dominion with a staff of more than 26,000 Salaries and wages paid every year exceed £10,000,000. There are about 250 trades, professions and occupations in the railways, some of which are not all connected directly with the railways and running of trains.
