WHAKATANE AND TAURANGA CAN DO MUCH AS FRIENDS
“I would like to make it clear that as far as the Tauranga Harbour Board is concerned we do not intend to enter into a controversy of Tauranga versus Whakatane,” declared the chairman of the Tauranga Harbour Board, Mr J. D. Alach, when referring to the two Bay of Plenty deep sea port schemes during a recent tour of inspection of the Tauranga Harbour, attended by representatiyes of local bodies from many parts of the Bay of Plenty. “We do not intend selling our goods by condemning what the other salesman has to sell,” he added. Mr Alach said that the Tauranga Harbour Board wanted to work in co-operation with the Whakatane district. If that co-operation was forthcoming as he knew it would be, then both Tauranga and Whakatane could do much for the Bay of Plenty as friends. As enemies they could achieve nothing. Would Go Ahead
Even if the decision to establish a timber port at Tauranga did not materialise, he felt sure the port of Tauranga would go ahead. The people of Whakatane thought they had a good scheme for a harbour, Mr D. Butler replied, on behalf of the Whakatane County Council. However, as laymen, they were not in a position to know that. They were simply leaving it for the experts to decide but they wanted the proposal considered. Other speakers commended the friendly attitude adopted by both the Whakatane and Tauranga Harbour Boards although they pointed out that both districts should work together when the final site for the Bay of Plenty port was selected.
