Two Te Whaiti Maori Girls Win Notable N.Z. Scholarships

Although extremely capable at most school subjects Elizabeth Anderson, 13-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Anderson, Te Whaiti, Winner of the Ngarimu Scholarship, has also had an outstanding career in school sport. The scholarship she was successful in gaining is valued at £IOO and tenable for four yeafs, open to any Form 11. child of Maori descent for all-round excellence after a competitive examination followed by a personal interview.

Elizabeth also won a four-year scholarship tenable at Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College, Christchurch, but she declined this in favour of the Ngarimu Scholarship, which she will hold at St. Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College, GreenmeadOWS. \

The Christchurch scholarship is usually awarded, all other things being equal, to a South Island girl. It was eventually awarded to one of Elizabeth’s class-mates, Ida Christie, daughter of Mr and Mrs P. Christie, of Te Whaiti. Ida is also a Maori and aged 13. Both girls have left to attend their respective schools.
