Gift of Pohutukawa An unusual cargo will be carried by the New Zealand frigates which leave for Malta early in April. They will take 1000 pohutukawa trees, a gift from the New Zealand Government to the small British outpost. The gift was first suggested in October last year by Cabinet. Rather Be Friends Should the putting forward ; of the Whakatane deep sea port proposal result in himself and other councillors becoming bad friends with those in local body affairs at Tauranga then, said Mr D. C. Butler, representing the Whakatane County Council at a recent gathering on the Tauranga Harbour, he did not wish to be associated with local bodies any longer or anywhere. He said that was the feeling among other members of his council at Whakatane. By The Tail Troubled by a large rat in the store section of his shop a Whakatane grocer set two traps one night last week close together. The next morning he found that one trap had been sprung but the only remains of the rat was an almost full tail and a few drops of blood. The trap w r as caught jammed between two sacks. The animal had apparently kept pulling and working his way round the trap until he had broken off his tail and then escaped, leaving the rear most portion of his antomy to tell the tale.
