Farm Production Record Established In N.Z. During 1949
The gross income from farm produce in New Zealand in 1948-49 reached the record total of £146,700,000. This is stated in the January issue of the Abstract of Statistics. It represents an increase of 8.3 per cent on the total for the previous year. The volume of all farm production—also a record —was up by 3.5 per cent. In the pastoral group a fall in the numbers of livestock slaughtered, though partly offset by an increase in the volume of wool produced, resulted in a slight fall in the total volume of production. Increases in prices, however, more than compensated for this gross income from pastoral production, increasing by 4.7 per cent. A substantial increase in butterfat production in 1948-49 was the main cause of larger increases in both value and volume in the group embracing dairying, poultry keeping and honey production. The value was again a record. .
