New Steam Power Stations Are Now Being Investigated
That the present Government was making efforts to find some way of improving the present acute power position in New Zealand was made clear ‘at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council by Cr W. Sullivan, who revealed that investigations were now being made of the possibility of establishing auxiliary steam plants near open cast coal mines. However, he added, the present idea' was to expand the King’s Wharf steam plant, at Auckland, and keep it as a standby when the hydro-electric power position improved. Some Recommendations
Mr Sullivan made these remarks after a copy of a statement had been read from the Hon W. S. Goosman, Minister-in-Charge, State Hydro-Electric Department. This revealed some of the recommendations to the Government in developing electric power in New Zealand.
Referring to the North Island the Minister stated that the main insistence of hydro-electric development should proceed as speedily as possible along the present lines. He also pointed out that steps were now being taken to find out whether geo-thermal power would be available. It was also intended to obtain advice about the possibility of establishing steam plants.
