Dissatisfaction With New Town Planning Scheme
Dissatisfaction with the limitations of the town planning scheme was expressed by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough .Council. He thought that the plan needed more careful consideration yet as it was going to hurt some people. It was all right classing Commerce Street as a light industrial area but nobody could obtain land there. In his opinion the plan was too rigid. Harbour Board reclaimed land was not available yet. Cr K. Needham said he had looked through a plan of Commerce Street and noticed that a number of sections were owned by people who probably had no intention of building. He wanted to know whether something could not be done to take the land.
Mr Barry said he thought it could be taken under the Town Planning Act.
However, as the completed new plan of the town has not been received from the town planning officer the question was left for future consideration.
