NO CHANGE MADE IN HOTEL SITE AT WHAKATANE
Following the refusal of the Licensing Commission to change the site of the proposed new hotel in the borough the Whakatane Borough Council decided at the monthly meeting on Monday not to proceed with the matter any further. There was no discussion on the subject after the Commission’s letter had been read to the Council, which was a reply to previous representations to have the site changed from an area within 30 chains of the corner of Eivers and Domain Roads to 30 chains from the new post office site, opposite the Pohaturoa Rock. The letter stated that the Commission could not, as matters stand at present, alter its decision regarding the area within which the new hotel had been authorised.
- Stronger Evidence
“The Commission would require very much stronger and more definite evidence than it has yet had that the area for the ' new hotel should be extended in the direction your letter suggests. The presentation of any such evidence would probably involve a further hearing and at any such hearing the views of the owners and licensees of the existing hotels yrould be relevant. “In the circumstances,” the letter concludes, “unless your Council presses for a further review of the authorised area the decision must stand.” ’ ,
