Horses Staging Comeback On Farms

A few years ago the doom of the heavy horse was prophesied with equanimity, according to the English “Farmer and Stockbreeder.’' Since then, however, there has been a change of mind and experts state that the horse is essential. The Ministry of Agriculture is becoming worried about the decline in horses. The horse population in 1943 was 703,000; in 1939 it was 845,854; the figure in' 1900 was 1,305,605. Last year 6276 horses were exported from Great Britain and, during the last four years, 178,659 horses were slaughtered for human consumption. The horse is sometimes preferred to the tractor on small holdings in England and even on the larger farms it is coming into its own again.
