Swill-Fed Pigs Kill Out Best In Test In England
The results of - research undertaken by the Middlesex branch of the Farmers’ Union into comparative methods of pig feeding have been spectacular, according to an article in the “Farmer and Stockbreeder.”
The average weight of five pigs fed on pudding for 17 weeks was 951 b—a rise of only 111 b each. Five pigs fed on privately-collected swill started at 911 b and averaged 2471 b when weighed on March 31. Five pigs fed on balanced pig meal averaged 811 b at the start of the test and finished at 2271 b. v \ At the last live weighing, four pigs/before slaughter, the puddingfed pigs weighed a total of 4741 b (dead weight 3241 b, dressing 68.3 per cent),, the swill pigs weighed 12361 b (9771 b, dressing 79 per cent), and the weight of the meal-fed pigs was 11361 b (8811 b, dressing 77.5 per cent). At the beginning of the test there was some difficulty in getting the pigs to eat the pudding and they had to be weaned on it by adding the gravy from the privately-pre-pared swill.
