WHAKATANE DEFEATS CUP CHALLENGE Tauranga made a.-determined but unsuccessful challenge for the Lees Cup when they were defeated by 18 games to five by Whakatane in a representative tennis match at Whakatane on Saturday. Played under warm conditions and on a slow court the game produced some good tennis at times. Results, with Tauranga names first:— Singles: Men: J. Nicholls lost to I. Wylds 6/1, 1/6, 2/6; N. Guiness lost to E. Wilson 6/5, 3/6, 2/6: P. Johnston lost to R. Wilson 0/6, 2/6; R. Dickson lost to P. Bryers 4/6, 2/6; R. Hunter lost to R. Mahy 6/1, 3/6, 1/6; H. McCarthy lost to G. Gordon 1/6, 5/6. Women: Miss E. Galbally lost to Miss M. Hall 1/6, 5/6; Miss P. Johnson lost to Mrs Bridger 6/2, 4/6, 4/6; Miss M. Potter beat Miss M. Pithie 6/2; 6/5; Miss P. Reader lost to Miss M. Gow 6/5, 2/6, 1/6. Doubles: Men: Nicholls and Guiness lost to Wylds and E. Wilson 5/6, 6/1, 5/7; Johnston and Hunter lost to R. Wilson and Bryers 0/6, 4/6; Dickson and McCarthy beat Gordon and Mahy 2/6, 6/5, 6/4. Women: Misses Galbally and Reader beat Miss Hall and Mrs Bridger 6/3, 6/5; Misses Johnson and Potter lost to Misses Pithie and Gow 5/6, 4/6.
