NEW FLUORESCENT LIGHTING POPULAR IN PRIVATE HOMES

Once confined to shops, offices, factories and similar places, fluorescent lighting is becoming increasingly popular for lighting private homes in New Zealand. In some homes at Whakatane and in other parts of the Bay of Plenty many people now enjoy this new form of lighting. Fluorescent lamps give an extremely cloSe approximation of natural daylight. If “warmer" tones are preferred, there are lamps that give' a light which is delicately rose or amber-tinted. In some cases ordinary filament lamps are used as occasional floor or table standards in combination with a fluorescent installation.

Free From Glare Fluorescent lighting has the advantage of being very restful, free from glare and economical in electricity consumption. The cost of installation and fittings, its protagonists claim, is counter-balanced, by the very life of the lamps. The principle of fluorescent lighting is that' invisible light inside the body of the tubular lamp is converted into visible light by the mixture of fluorescent powders with which the interior of the glass tube is coated. By changing the constituent powders it is possible to change the colour of the light.
