Labour Shortage May Delay Topdressing Of Some Bay Farms
Although this year is expected to be a record one for topdressing in the Bay of Plenty present indications are that farmers are going to be delayed because of a shortage of labour at one of the large Auckland fertiliser works. One of the main causes of the labour shortage, it is understood, lies in the demand on seasonal labour at this time of the year. Much of the labour will be engaged 'at freezing works until about March.
Three months ago the fertiliser works were appealing to farmers to place their orders ahead. At present, through the lack, of rain, the land is too parched to topdress and Bay of Plenty farmers are not, it is reported, at present pressing for supplies. But during next month, it is estimated that 80 per cent of the farmers in the district will place their orders.
Fertiliser rationing has been off for about a year.
