Earthquakes Felt At Whakatane

Several small earthquakes were felt at Whakatane yesterday, most of them in the afternoon. Although of short duration the shakes in some cases were sharp and quite violent but not strong enough to cause any damage. The most violent occurred about 4 p.m. when a small shake was followed immediately afterward by one of a very much sharper nature. On Friday night a strong smell of sulphur was noticeable at Whakatane, especially to those people living near the Whakatane river. It is thought to have -Come from White Island as the wind was blowing from that direction during the night.
