Dearer Boots And Shoes Following Hide Price Rise
Boots and shoes made from New Zealand leathers are now more expensive, retail price increases arising from the higher cost of hides coming into force a few days ago. A leading manufacturer estimated the average markup as follows: Men’s working boots, 8s; men’s shoes, 4s to 6s; women’s shoes, 2s 6d to 3s 6d. The margin depended on the amount of leather used in the article, he said. The price of hides was increased late in September from 8d to 15d a pound, bringing the range nearer, but still considerably below, world parity on export markets. This is estimated to cost New Zealand tanners about £750,000 a £ear on rulin'g productive rktes.
