½-Ton Potato Crop From 2lbs Seed

What is believed to be a record potato yield for Australia was established in the 1949 season by Mr C. B. Powell, of Claredon, South Australia. From two pounds of seed potatoes he grew 133621 b of tubers.

The variety was the recently-in-troduced American Sebago, which has become very popular in the hill districts of South Australia. The seed was cut into 163 sets, of which 152 grew to maturity. Tubers from 14 plants in an average row filled a sack weighing 148 lb.—an average of 10£lb. a plant. An individual plant produced 181 b. of potatoes, some of which weighed three pounds.
