Councils Study Whakatane Maori Rate Collecting
Considerable interest in the system of Maori rate collecting as adopted by the Whakatane County Council’s collector, Mr A. O. Stewart, is now being shown by other county councils throughout the North Island. Inquiries have been received from many councils asking for advice and one, the Hobson County Council, Dargaville, even sent one member of its staff Mr J. Walters, to Whakatane on Wednesday. The Whakatane County Council is one of the few councils in New Zealand that collects most of its rates from Maori landowners and this has impressed councils in other centres who usually write off thousands of pounds each year. It is understood that the Hobson County Council sent Mr Walters to Whakatane to observe Mr Stewart’s methods with the intention of later making him Maori rate collector in their area. Mr Walters returned to Dargaville yesterday.
