WHAKATANE TO GISBORNE IN 1½ HOURS

Just 1J- hours after leaving Whakatane by the local St John Ambulance a patient was admitted to the Cook Hospital, Gisborne. This almost unbelievable speed in transport between the two centres was accomplished by the ambulance with the aid of the Opotiki Aero Club.

The vehicle left Whakatane and reached Opotiki in 50 minutes where the patient was transferred and flown to Gisborne in 70 minutes. Members of the ambulance staff returned by plane and were back in Whakatane about five hours after they had left. 1889 Miles Travelled This was only one of the fast trips undertaken by the volunteer ambulance of the Whakatane St John Ambulance Association during last month. In that time the ambulance travelled 1889 miles in a travelling time of 76 hours. Ten local district calls were answered and six long distance trips undertaken.

Beside the flying visit to Gisborne a similar one was made to Auckland, a patient being admitted to the hospital there 3J hours after leaving Whakatane. In this case the journey from Rotorua to Auckland was by plane. Other long trips by road were undertaken to Gisborne, Tokonui. Auckland and Hamilton.
