DISCARDED BOTTLES

Sir,—On a recent bus trip from Galatea to Whakatane 17 beer bottles were counted lying either in the middle or on the side of the road, some with the necks broken off. These bottles constitute a very serious hazard on a road of this nature. On a good flat road it is fairly easy to avoid them but on such a road as this where one has often to pull in very close to the side to let another vehicle go past they are as dangerous on the side of the road as they are on the actual road surface, i 1 / It is hard to think of any way in which to deal with offenders of this nature, as it is very seldom that they can be caught in the act of throwing the bottles. Perhaps it is just thoughtlessness on their part, in which case it is hoped that ,if they read this item they will realise the danger they’ cause and mend their ways, otherwise the onus will have to continue to fall, as it does at present, on the unoffending drivers to be constantly on the lookout for discarded bottles and hope that they can always avoid them in time. Yours etc., TYRED TIM.
