“FRAGRANT ALLEY”

Sir, —If the street that runs along the river bank behind the main shopping arek of Whakatane is not yet named, might I, a humble newcomer from Petone, suggest “Fragrant Alley.” The euphemistic “fragrant” might tend to stop visitors and newcomers like me from thinking the otherwise quite attractive promenade stinks. I presume that this town, like others, has by-laws governing the dumping of decaying refuse in public places; and I think I am also entitled to presume that the citizens are sufficiently interested in their own health to want to protect it. lam amazed, shocked, to find that such a potential fever spot exists in a town which is otherwise so clean and attractive. Even my dog refused to swim in the polluted locality. Yours etc., VISITOR.
