LOCAL CANDIDATES WIN * MEDALLION S'
Fifteen women and men members of the Whakatane Surf Life Saving Club succeeded in passing the examination for their surf medallions yesterday. Examiners were Messrs Bonnici and Branch of Auckland, who expressed their complete satisfaction at the way in which all the candidates passed a’ stiffish test. The fifteen will now be qualified to compete in the New Zealand championships, and it is the Club’s intention to enter teams. The successful candidates: Misses Joan Armstrong, Margaret Wilson,' June Wilson, Kay Needham, Carol Wimdley, Frances Windley, Val. Hannah, Charmaine Fitzgerald, Rayon Williams, Beverley Murray; v Dr E .F. C. Hefford, Messrs Jim Pearson, Max Comer, Gerald Gartshore, and Ray Scobie. BIG CARNIVAL THIS WEEK
Life Saving teams from the two Gisborne Clubs (Gisborne and Wainui Beach) from Waihi, Mt Maunganui and Whakatane will be competing in a surf carnival at Ohope next Sunday. Bay of Plenty championships will be decided for both men and women and, in the women’s events, \the Rivett Cup will also be at stake.
It will be interesting to see how the local teams go stacked up against stiff opposition on their own beach. Their record, particularly that of the women’s team, last year suggests that the visitors will have to work hard to get ahead.
