“Portie” Gets Wrong Bouquet

Not as young as she used to be, but still a game little battler and well-loved locally, the Port Whakatane nevertheless picked up a bouquet she didn’t deserve the other day. The Beacon was given to understand, and in all good faith handed on to the joublic, that she had featured in the rescue of some marooned mermaids from a rock at the Heads.

Alas, ’twas not so. The boat that did the job was Mr Lloyd George’s launch, with the owner on the quarter deck and Mr Waugh, the “Portie’s” skipper, beside him. Hero of the hour was Mr Keith Hollis, who took the “Portie’s” dinghy over to the rocks to get the women off. A risky business, with credit due to all hands.
