REVELLERS NO TROUBLE OVER HOLIDAY TIME

Though the town was packed both the Friday before Christmas and last Friday, the crowds were orderly, and there were no incidents in Whakatane needing police intervention. Definitely the carnival spirit was abroad, perhaps more so than last year, but the “whoopee” was of a harmless, cheery nature. With retailers not quite back into their stride after the hectic rush of the last pre-holiday days, it is early yet to say how this year’s shopping panned out from their • point of view, but it is safe to say that the public had better shopping this year than for some time, with more goods available and a-slightly easing price, tendency on many lines.

The Carnival Committee’s efforts to keep the crowds interested were appreciated by both local residents and visitors alike, as indicated by the carefree spirits of the crowds both late shopping nights.

Taneatua, also had a couple of bumper late nights, aided considerably by the carnival festivities organised by the War Memorial Committee. The way it worked out this year, both Whakatane and Taneatua had splendid opportunities to cater for the festive mood of the district's citizens without competing with each other. Consequently Taneatua’s Saturday nights were every bit as bright as Whakatane’s Fridays, and the competitive events on New Year’s Eve brought a lot of people from Whakatane where Saturday evening was quiet but for the usual private parties and the efforts of a Maori band to enliven the town.
