Chemists’ Hours f There will be a chemist open at Whakatane during the Christmas and new year period for one hour each evening, from 7 o’clock to 8. There will not be any open on December 25 or January 1. 'Ohope Card Evening 1
A card evening wap held recently at Mrs E. R. Marryatt’s home, Ohope, the guests of the evening being Mesdames White, Pearson and Thomason, each of whom was presented with a gift.
Longest Day . The 1949 summer solstice, occurred yesterday and marked the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere and the official beginning of summer. The meteorological summer began several weeks ago. It varies from'place to place each year with local climatic variations. Mail Collected On Tuesday, December 27 and January 3 all mail at Whakatane for Frankton Junction and Auckland will close at 7 a.m. the post office advised yesterday./ As a result all street boxes will be cleared at 6 a.m. and later mail will be sorted the following morning. New Parking Area
A new parking area beside the borough council chambers , has now been completed for use for motorists at Whakatane and should help to ease the lack of parking space in the town. It is a large area with entrance from Commerce Street and at the end of the Strand and traffic will be able to use it from tonight. Hotel Hours
Th6re will be little change in the hotel hours at Whakatane over the holiday period. Hotels will observe normal hours on every day, except Christmas Day, and will be open as usual on December 26. Today and tomorrow and also December 30 and 31 all hotels are to observe the normal trading hours. At one time, when Christmas Day fell on a Sunday, it was not lawful for hotels to be open on the following day, but the law has since been altered. Cream, £1 a Gallon ! Although cream may now be purchased in New Zealand until January 15 the prices for al quantities are still fairly high, according to the latest price order. To the consumer cream in \ pint bottles or four ounce cartons costs Bd, half pint bottles or eight ounce cartons Is 4d, one pint bottles or 16 ounce cartons 2s 8d each. Loose cream in a quantity of less than two pints costs 2s 8d per pint while loose cream in a quantity of two pints or more sells at 20s 4d per gallon.
