Many Gladioli Blooms Displayed
LOCAL SHOW ATTRACTS FIRST CLASS ENTRIES
Because of the earlier season, which reached its peak about a fortnight ago some blooms were not at their best at the annual show of the Whakatane Gladiolus Society on Tuesday. Despite this however, there were some fine flowers exhibited and the judges, .Mr H. G. Harpour, Auckland, and Mr W. J. Brown, Tauranga, found their work very difficult and judging took longer than usual.
Comparing the flowers with those he had seen exhibited at Auckland and other centres Mr Harpour said he was quite convinced that Whakatane gardners knew how to grow gladioli. There were some outstanding blooms that would, in his opinion, equal those grown anywhere in the North Island. When entering Whakatane he had been impressed with the number of gladioli growing in gardens. Nearly everyone seemed to go in for the flowers and the soil and climate of this part of the Bay of Plenty seemed unusually suited for gladiolus. Entries in the show were about the same as .last year and all blooms were attractively displayed throughout the winter show building. Fine flowers of a variety of colours in the different classes revealed the months of care and attention that inust have been lavished on them. These were seen by a large crowd, which visited the show throughout the day and early evening when a number of blooms were sold and the remainder sent to the hospital. The most points for the show were gained by W. E. Stringer with W. J. Brown in the open sections. The amateur went to H. J. Ryde intermediate Miss A. Black, novice Mrs J. Murphy, and decorative Mrs P. Coutts. / '
The public vote on the most popular bloom went to a spike of .“Robert Bennett”, exhibited by H. J. Ryde. Full results: — / OPEN GLASS: Three spikes distinct: W. J. Brown 1, W. E. Stringer 2, P.
