New Tearooms Near Lake Rotoiti To Be Run By Maori Staff

A new tearooms to be run entirely by Maori staff has just been built on the shores of Lake Rotoiti beside the main Whakatane-Roto-rua highway and is to be opened to the public for the Christmas and new year holiday period. It is of roughcast construction on the lower portions and the upper part is of totara shingles. The roof is tiled and the building is a credit to the workmanship of the Maori Rehabilitation trainees who built it.

In the building, which overlooks the lake, are a post office and small store and dairy. French doors in the front of the tearooms open on to a concrete terrace overlooking the lake. The tearooms can easily be converted to a dance hall or for similar uses. It is tastefully finished in cream and green throughout and is equipped with fluorescent light. , A large stone fireplace, capable of taking a seven-foot log, surrounded by a Maori carving and surmounted by a large painting of the wishing tree, holds the' promise of ample warmth for winter.
