COUNTY COUNCIL SUPPORTS SCHEME FOR AN ABATTOIR
The scheme of the Whakatane Borough Council to establish an .. abattoir in the district to supply meat for the borough and county was supported by members of the Whakatane County Council at Monday’s meeting. With the addition of adequate grazing paddocks, a digestor to dispose of waste offal and the possible manufacture of meat-meal and blood and bone the Council considered that such a Works would be a valuable acquisition for the district and would ensure a permanent supply of top grade meat. / The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, said that the abattoir ~ had ( only reached the discussion stage but the Borough Council wanted a larger area than the borough to supply meat. He thdught it would be an excellent scheme for the county. Some people might object because of a slight increase in the price of meat because of the "distance it might have to be carted but this . would be offset by a sure supply
of good meat. Mr Burnett said that a digestor wrould provide a handy service to ] farmers to dispose of dead animals M and there was the possible manufacture of fertiliser for local sale. "'Some of the grazing paddocks might, also be used as saleyards. He suggested that a suitable central site would be somewhere between Awakeri and Whakatane .West. Mr Burnett made it quite clear that the abattoir would be a Borough Council project controlled by that body. Other councillors agreed with Mr Burnett and it was decided to support the scheme suggesting an abattoir district of the whole / of the Whakatane County, excluding Rua■fahuna, Galatea and Murupara.
