P. ARMSTRONG WINS THIRD TRIAL FOURS
The final trial fours of the Whakatane Rowing Club for 1949 went to a crew stroked by P. Armstrong on Saturday when he defeated G. Moore’s crew by three-quarters of a length in the final. Moore stroked his crew to a lucky win in the first heat after L. Stewart’s crew dogged by bad luck had to stop and start again on three ocasions. In the second heat Armstrong had a convincing win over M. Whittaker’s crew.
For the final Armstrong’s crew, M. Brown, R. Seebeck, A. Atkinson (Lynds cox) gained a quick lead from the start over Moore, G. Koea, K. Bowering, C. Fitzsimmons (Delahunty cox) and soon increased this to two lengths. This was held for the greater part of the race until 200 yards from home when Moore challenged and began to overhaul Armstrong at every stroke. The lead was too great however, and Armstrong raced across comfortably.
In the three trial fours held this season Armstrong has stroked the winning crew' in each case.
