Send To The Lonely Ones
Mentioning “plain hunger” as one of his reasons for leaving Scotland to come and live in New Zealand, Major John MacKenzie, a recent Tauranga settler, told the Whakatane Rotary Club on Tuesday night that he just couldn’t believe anyone living alone could avoid real hunger on 'present British rations. In a family, it was not so bad. He suggested, therefore, that anyone wanting to send parcels over there should try if possible to have them delivered to people who had to live alone. For the elderly ones in particular, conditions were pretty grim.
