Farmers Did Not Want A Controversy Over New Bay Port

“The aim of my address is to obviate any misunderstanding which might occur in a somewhat contentious and difficult matter,” said Mr R. W. Dunning, Otakiri, in addressing the quarterly meeting of the Rotorua Sub-Province of Federated Farmers. He referred to the recent meeting regarding proposals to establish a port to serve the Bay of Plenty. Mr Dunning said the Bay of Plenty branch did not desire to enter into any controversy as to where a port should go. The branch was concerned that if there was to be a deep-water port for the Bay of Plenty, it should go in the correct place. The site of a port could only be determined after a careful investi-’ gation of the whole position, free from any parochial interests. Regarding proposals to establish fertiliser and freezing works in the Bay of Plenty, he said that this also merited a careful and exhaustive investigation. Farmers had committed themselves to undertakings for which they were still paying, he concluded.
