RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF WATER IN BOROUGH IMPOSED

/ Restrictions on the use of water at Whakatane have again been, imposed by the Whakatane Borough Council to last during the summer months, and now mean that hoses can only be used in the borough between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. During this period they must be held by hand.

The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said that it was necessary to impose hose restrictions because the reservoir was not holding any water in reserve. In the event of a large fire there would not be an adequate supply. ' If restrictions were not obeyed it would be necessary to prosecute. He believed there was a large amount of water being wasted, despite all the publicity. The electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, reported that water . restrictions were necessary because the demand on the supply was very much increased on that of last year. This was due probably to the large number of new'consumers connected.

He urged that an inspection should also be made of leaky taps and other water installations.
