Attempt To Re-Float Sunken Barge Off Rurima Islands
Attempts are to be made again to re-float a barge, which sank on the Whakatane side off the Rurima Islands a few weeks ago. The barge was being towed to Tauranga with 100 tons of sand when it sank in 87 feet of water.
One attempt has already been made to re-float the craft but after being raised about 20 feet the wire ropes snapped and the barge settled again. At present it is being deck downwards with the mast sticking into the sand.
