FOOD HANDLERS ATTEND COURSE AT WHAKATANE

The first instructional course for food handlers in the Bay of Plenty district was held in the Borough Council Chambers at Whakatane. It was arranged by the Borough and County. Councils in co-operation with the Department of Health. Strip films with recorded commentaries, and sound films in Technicolour especially imported from' U.S.A. for the purpose were used and lectures were given by the District Health Inspector, Mr Adams and Mr A. R. Knights. Both sessions were well attended by owners and employees from various types of food premises in the Borough and County, and Mr Knights, interviewed afterwards, expressed his satisfaction with the support and interest shown. There was much favourable comment on the material presented, and it is expected that the standard of food handling will be raised. A feature of the programme was a film on eating house practice, taken in New Zealand by the Government film unit for the Health Department. This first course was designed primarily for eating houses and similar establishments, in response to enquiries Mr Knights gave an assurance that short courses dealing with other types of food premises will be conducted as soon as possible next year.
