SCOTSMEN WILL CELEBRATE SAINT ANDREW TODAY
Today Scotsmen the world over will he celebrating the anniversary of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, and who is believed to have been the first disciple and oneW"'' of the apostles of Jesus. Littlje is known of the early life of St. Andrew and almost nothing after the Crucifiction.
About 700 years after his, death Saint Andrew became the Patron Saint of Scotland in some obscure manner. Around the lives " f most Saints it is difficult to iDart the truth from legend and St, Andrew, in this regard, is ho exception. According to tradition he preached the gospel in Scythia, Northern Greece, and Epirus. In 62 or 70 A.D. he suffered martyrdom on the cross at Patrae in Achaia.
Besides Scotland, St. Andrew is also held in great generation in Russia, where he is believed to have been the apostle who first preached the gospel in that country- The Russian Order of St. Andrew, the highest award in the Russian Empire, was founded by Peter the Great in 1698 and was considered the finest tribute to the Saint. His cross is a white saltire on blue ground to represent the f shaped cross on which St. AndremJ suffered martyrdom. It is the national banner of Scotland and is combined with the crosses of Sty George and St. Patrick in the Union Jack.
St. Andrew’s day is to be celebrated at Whakatane tonight in the band room. '
