Fair Standard For All Classes Is Labour’s Aim
A fair crowd turned out to hear Mr Godfrey Santon at Ohope on Saturday night. Mr C. H. Brebner was inthe chair. At the conclusion of the meeting a unanimous vote of thanks to the speaker and of confidence in the Government was carried.
Mr Santon said the Labour Party believed in a fair standard for all classes, and that no business could prosper unless the workers had the money to buy. He believed all workers should receive a fair wage and should be prepared to give a fair return for their pay. He would be the first to condemn anyone who slacked.
Dealing with Communism Mr Santon quoted the Labour Party slogan, “Toryism breeds Communism. Avoid both by voting Labour.” He said people were amazed that, although the Nationalists criticised the Communists they were the first to rush to their defence whenever the Labour Party had taken a strong line with them. Here he quoted from Randolph Churchill as having said in Austria in 1947 that in New Zealand we had neither Socialism nor Capitalism, but something between the / two. Dealing with building prices Mr Santon said he had recently / inspected a new house built at Rotoiti by a Tauranga builder—Boo square feet at £1 a foot including electric light, hot water and stove — “a really nice job with the best of materials and workmanship.” This afternoon Mr Santon speaks at Manawahe, at Matahina at 6 p.m. and at Edgecumbe at 8. His campaign finishes at Rotorua tomorrow.
