PETER BUCK’S NEW BOOK ON MAORI PEOPLE IN DEMAND
First released at Whakatane some three weeks ago Sir Peter Buck’s latest book “The Coming of the Maoris” has been in extraordinary demand and supplies have had to be replenished by the local dealer. It is reported that at least half of the edition of 2500 copies has been sold. Containing 548 pages “The Coming of the Maori” gives a comprehensive survey of the Maori, his history and his habits and customs. For the student it is an invaluable book. Even to the modern Maori. it would provide valuable reading. It is now regarded as the most authoritative work yet published on the Maori people. • Sir Peter Buck’s book, for which he gave the manuscript to the Maori Purposes Board, has been published for the board. While 2500 is a fairly large edition of any bookjl published within New Zealand, it hardly likely to fulfil requirementJjH particularly orders from which are likely to be considerable^ Delivered originally in, 1925 as a . lecture at Cawthorn Institute, “The Coming of the Maori” has twice M been published in pamphlet form. However, since then it has been expanded at much length, new material embodied, and certain of Sir j Peter’s earlier conjectures rejected by the author. '
