OUTRIGHT WIN FOR UNITED OVER MATAMATA Accurate bowling by the Bay of Plenty representatives L. R. Spring and W. J. McKenzie contributed largely to Whakatane United’s outright win by ten wickets in a cricket - match against Matamata at Matamata during the week-end. McKenzie claimed six wickets for 54 runs in the team’s first innings and in their second 3 for 6. Spring was consistent to take 3 for 27 and 3 for 39Details:— Matamata 126 (P. West, 32, D. Spring 3 for 39) defeated by Whakatane United 231 (W. J. McKenzie 109, I. Yates 42, W. Crawford 31, W. Alexander 22; S.■ Barnes 5 for 68) and 1 4 for no wickets. EDGECUMBE GOES DOWN TO P. AND T. £> After a good start in their first innings Edgecumbe collapsed ip their second and so gave Whakatane P. and T. an outright win by two wickets in a cricket match at , Edgecumbe yesterday. Edgecumbe bowlers tried desperately to gull the game out of the fire and almost succeeded. The most successful of the home bowlers were Thurlow, who took 6 for 32 and Br-own 4 for 27 and 3 for 25. Full details:— Whakatane P. and T. 61 (W. Rivett 30; h. Thurlow 6 for 32, Brown 4 for 27) and 64 for 8 (J. Rivett 28, Pa top 16) defeated Edgecumbe 95 (Brown 26, K. Tunnicliffe 21, Thurlow 14; Malaquin 4 for 11, Cleland 2 for 17) and 29 (Malaauin 4 Tor 6, Paton 2 for 3, Cleland 2 for 4) outright. /
SCHOOL FAILS AGAINST V; OLD BOYS A win by v 24 runs on the first innings was gained by Whakatane P. and T. Old Boys over Whakatane High School at the Domain on Saturday. School batted well in the first innings to total 128. This was overtaken by Old Boys, who had no difficulty in reaching their 152, with a fine performance by Paton.- He made 105 not out. .
Old Boys 152 (Paton 105 not out, D. Bridge 2 for 11) beat High School 128 (Whiteside 33, Fitzsimmons 17, Kirk 18; McKenzie 6 for 25). , .
