Over Two Million More Women Than Men In England

There are nearly two and a-half million more women than men in England and Wales. That indicates there are by no means enough husbands to go round. The disquieting facts .are disclosed by the Register-General’s estimates of the civil population up to the end of 1947, just published by H.M. Stationery Office at 2/6. The total civilian male population of all ages up. to 85 stands at 19,888,000 males etnd 22,268,000 females —a rise of “surplus” ‘women of 2,380,000 from 1,686,357 in 1931. Analysing this disparity by age groups there are two women to one man over the age of 85 in many areas; over the whole country the total in this highest age group is 61,000 men and 132,000 women. The combined total in 1931 was 96,000. The ratio of men to women is near parity only between the ages of 18 to 24; there are 1.017 men to every 1000 women at 18-19; 1021 men to 1000 women at 20-24. After that the ratio declines to an 'average of 940 .men per thpusand women at all ages. Women also continue to live longer. The fact that so many women are “surplus” can of course, be misleading. . Millions of women earn their own living, whole or part time up to the age of 70.
