Matata W.I. Holds Twentieth Birthday
Decorated bowls and posies created a festive air for the 20th birthday party of the Matata Women’s Institute when visitors were present from, a large number of sister institutes. Games, competitions and musical items took up the greater part of a pleasant afternoon. A sales tablq was well 1 filled with a variety of useful articles and Jhe steady sales benefited the social fund. A' pianoforte duet was presented by Mrs Warbrick and Miss . Jo Anderson while several duets were sung by Misses Riini and Norma Howell. The special birthday cake was made and donated by Mrs R. Wilson.
Competition results:— Jass bowl, Mrs Laugeson 1, Mrs R. Wilson 2, Mrs Warbrick 3. Vase Iceland poppies, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Warbrick 2. Child’s slippers, Mrs Taylor 1. 4 sultana scones, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs R. Withy 2, Mrs Dredge 3. Victorian posy, Mrs Jamieson 1, Mrs Laugeson 2. Best flower, Mrs R. Withy 1, Mrs Warbrick , Miss Burt ,3. Best vegetable, Mrs Jamieson I,' Mrs Conn 2, Mrs Withy 3.
Howard Oldfield, of Los Angeles, was granted a divorce after he had told the judge that for 39 years his wife Charlotte had .refused to let him go to a baseball game, or even to listen to them on the radio.
