WHAKATANE CLUB OPENS NEW SEASON Competing in his last regatta with his club before being transferred to Te Puke today, R. King stroked the winning crew to victory in the trial fours races at the opening day of the Whakatane Rowing Club on Saturday. King’s crew, Kiddie, D. McGlashan, P. M. Cropp, rowed particularly well in all their heats and went through to win the final by 1J lengths. Visitors to the opening were members of the Tauranga Rowing Club, who made up crews with members of the home club for each race.
Races were held under ideal conditions and before a large crowd. Before the racing of the semi-finals the season was officially opened by the club president, Mr B. Cutler, who expressed appreciation to a number of well known personages of the district for bding present.
Detailed results:— / First heat: G. Dines (str) G. Koea, G. Watts, Tinney, cox Delahunity, beat P. Armstrong (str), W. Sandham, Phillips, B. Fitzsimmons, cox Flay by 1-J lengths. Second heat: M. Whittaker, A. Atkinson, K. O’Rourke, Griffin, Lynds dead heat with M. Brown, G. Angds, R. Burt, Herbert, M. Reid. ' Third heat: R. King, J. Kiddie, D. McGlashen, Ml Cropp, Flay beat A. Stewart, G. Butler, W. Stuart, D. Baker, Delahunty by 1 length. Fourth heat: Gilpin, S. Shapley, G. Henry, S. Stubbs Lynds beat Randall, E. Hunt, K. Bowering, R. Seebeck, N. Reid by 1 length. Fifth heat: P. Bowering, N. lies, C. Roberts, D. Wells, Flay beat L. O. Stewart, K. Dines, Ferguson, Kane, Delahunty by three feet.
Semi-finals: M. Brown’s crew beat C. Moore, T. Stewart, H. lies, . C. Butler, Lynds by two feet. Whittaker’s crew beat Dines’s crew by 1£ lengths. King’s crew beat Gilpin’s crew by two lengths. Brown’s crew beat Bowering’s crew by 11lengths. King’s crew beat Whittaker’s crew by 1| lengths. . Final: King’s crew beat Brown’s crew by 1} lengths.
