Natives Encouraged With Own Arts
The mission schools of Melanesia have always encouraged the natives to develop their own arts such as weaving, carving, singing and dancing the Right Rev S. G. Caulton, Bishop of Melanesia, told the Beacon in an interview at Whakatane. However, there was often some difficulty here as the native preferred to imitate the white man in many ways.
“This is a ' natural inclination among natives,” said the Bishop, “but in the schools the girls 1 are taught weaving and other useful household arts known to the native.”
