Gay Crowd Attends Annual United Rugby Club Dinner
Visitors from all. over the district attended the annual dinner of the United Rugby Football Club at Whakatane on Saturday night. The large crowd determined to have a good time was in no way disappointed and the generous dinner combined with an ample supply of the cup of good cheer- made this quite possible. Dancing followed the eating.
The dinner itself was an example of how to feed about 100 people.' - The tables literally groaned with roast pork, salad, jellies, crayfish and a great variety of other foods. Even after the actual eating had finished there was an ample selection still untouched.
Dancing was kept going at a pace all the evening by Freddie Burt’s Orchestra and throughout there was no lack of liquid refreshment when those stepping it out reached the thirsty stage. The hall was gaily decorated with greenery and fern, and the dancing was held in a square in the centre. On the outer floor tables and seats were placed with the remains of the dinner, which steadily disappeared through the evening. Following a policy of former years there were few speeches and only five toasts were honoured. They were:— i The King, Mr P. Bryers; United Football Club, proposed by F. Milne reply Mr B. Norman; Whakatane referees, Mr J. P.olfe—Mr W. Chambers; Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union, Mr R. S. Buttimore—Mr D. O. Stewart; the Caterers, Mr G. K. Koea—• Mr P. Fail-brother.
