Guy Fawkes Night To Be Celebrated In A Big Way
Guy Fawkes night this year is going to be something to be remembered by those children who are too young to remember the displays of pre-war days. A number of public bonfires will offer entertainmer.:
on the grand scale. On Saturday morning an unusually busy scene was going on at the end of Beach street, just over the mud flats from Whakatane. Large trucks with old tyres and other inflammable material were arriving and being unloaded by a busy gang of workers carrying out plans of that old Guy Fawkes campaigner, Mr Len Luke.
By 10 o’clock what appeared at a distance to be a huge ladder pointed skywards, with ten men working at various heights. In the afternoon, more willing workers and some children arrived to give a hand with the finishing touches, and by 5 o’clock the huge bonfire structure was complete. Securely fixed on the top, 40 feet from the ground, one can see the effigy of Guy Fawkes which will no doubt be visible to the whole surrounding district when the fire is lit on Saturday night, to accompany an unusually spectacular fireworks display. In addition to the main fire, there are two smaller ones, and a display framework is raised well above the ground. Night’s Fun At Ohope A grand night’s fun at Ohope is being planned by the Ohope Bonfire Committee, which started its operations successfully last year, and hopes to put on a much better and bigger display this year. The bonfire is not to be built until Saturday. Too much temptation to the mischievous, the sponsons think. Whakatane Sawmillers Ltd. have donated slabs for a fire on a grand scale. Though not all the fireworks ordered could be supplied, the display promises to be spectacular, and the greatest attraction of all will be the part staged by the A.T.C. with llares and rockets. ;■ , A dance and social is to follow the fireworks display, and there is to be a prize for the best Guy Fawkes costume. Proceeds of the dance will go to make next year’s display even bigger and better. Country Districts, Too
Country districts, too, are getting ready for a big night. Once more' the Thornton Scouts will be handling the job in that locality, and reports are that they are planning to do it in a really big way. At Edgecumbe, a huge bonfire and grand fireworks display is to be run on Mr D. S. Radcliffe’s property for the benefit of funds to cover the expenses involved in the ceremonial unveiling of the plaque in memory of Edgecumbe’s fallen in the war just past.
