Junior Red Cross Rally At Tauranga Well Organised

Representatives of the many Junior Red Cross Circles in over thirty schools in the Tauranga district gathered in the College Hall, Tauranga, on Saturday for an interesting and enthusiastic rally. Mrs V. D. Boyce, Junior Red Cross Organiser for Tauranga Centre, was responsible for the efficient arrangements.

Mr Cameron, President l of the Tauranga Red Cross Centre, welcomed the visitors and the Juniors. Mrs Wilkinson, Mayoress of Tauranga, also greeted those present, in the unavoidable absence of Mr Wilkinson.

Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P., .introduced by Mrs Boyce, spoke in eugolistic terms of the value of the Junior, Red Cross movement, particularly its aim of “International Friendship” in which lay, he said, the greatest hope of future world, peace. Miss P. Patterson, Director of Junior Red Cross, spoke briefly, and in very high praise of Mrs Boyce’s work. The Dominion, Chairman of Red Cross, Mr A. E. (Gibbons, also spoke of the excellent work done by the

AAA A rffk A.A AAAAA AA A A-A Juniors in the district under Mrs Boyce’s leadership, and that of many enthusiastic school teachers. Mrs Doidge was also present, and among those who attended from other Centres were Miss E. House (Waikato), and Mrs A. W. Winstone (Whakatane). A roll call of J.R.C. Circles was called. Children from many schools had come in national costume and y those gathered in front of the stage and made a colourful group. Many wore authentic costumes, notably the Chinese, Japanese apd Welsh representatives. The singing of the V Junior Red Cross song concluded the morning’s proceedings. An exhibition of Junior work was displayed in the Hayward Hall, where a delicious home-made luncheon was served. In the afternoon an entertainment was given in the College Hall. Hakas and action songs given by Maori children were excellently done; a Swiss dance in costume, a sketch, and a very entertaining item, how a Junior Red Cross meeting should, and should not, be conducted were received applause. Addresses by Miss Patterson and Mr Gibbons were also given. Mrs Lee Ong returned thanks on behalf of the Juniors.

A cocktail party at the home of Mr and Mrs Cameron, preceded the evening’s proceedings, when a film of the International Red Cross Conference, held in Sweden last August, was shown.
