FORMER SOCIALIST SAYS SOCIALISM PROVEN FAILURE
“Socialism is a proven failure,” writes Mr Alfred Edwards, M.P., in the London Evening Standard. He had been a Socialist for 40 years, was expelled from the party for opposing steel nationalisation, arid has just joined the Conservatives instead. “I have been a Socialist,” he added, “for most of my life, and I recognise now that it is no good going on with Socialism, I say it with regret, but it is the truth.” Britain is not producing enough goods—“nor are we producing them as cheaply as our competitors. A.nd Socialism cannot help us to do either. In fact, it prevents us from doing either.” The key word of the Conservative policy is incentive, says Mr Edwards:
“To get people to work harder We must make it worth their while. We must pay by results. We must encourage profit-making. If a man takes risks he deserves rewards.
“We must not tax him to the point where it is not worth his while to make money or to save money.”
