W.I. FEDERATION’S 81-ANNUAL CL. MEETING
The Bi-annual Council meeting of the Eastern Buy of Plenty Federation of Women's Institutes was held in the Otakiri hall recently when Mrs McCallion, Federation President, presided over a fair attendance of delegates and members. A comprehensive report on the activities of the past six months was presented by Mrs Hewitt. A financial statement including the Drama Festival was given by Mrs Stewart. To fit in with a proposed Dominion Drama Festival to be held in Christchurch to coincide with the Dominion Conference, it was decided to hold the local Drama Festival early in May. The matter of the annual Eisteddfod was therefore held in abeyance. ‘ Mrs K. Brown and Mrs Wylde “V.O.’s” reported the formation of new Institutes, namely Whangarua and Nukuhou and the re-forming of Te Kaha, delegates from these Institutes being present at the meeting. After a delicious luncheon served by Otakiri members the main feature of the afteroon was a talk by Mrs Stewart of Whakatane on her experiences at the A.C.W.W. Conference which was held at Amsterdam.
Miss Dawn Armstrong sang two songs in most delightful .manner and was presented with a shoulder spray in appreciation. Sprays were also presented to Mrs McCallion and several members of the executive.

Six Months’ Work The bi-annual report said the principle activity had been the Drama Festival held at Taneatua on July 19 and 20, for which credit was due to the convener Mrs Mayo and to the Taneatua W.I. who worked so hard for its success. Six plays were entered each day and were judged by Mrs Terry of’Auckland, who spoke of their high standard and awarded first place to Taneatua in the Drama with “The Frozen Heart,” Waimana gained first in the comedy section with “From 5 to 5.30” and Dorothy Tebbutt of Taneatua, was adjudged best actress. The Festival was well patronised each day and the concerts held later at Waimana, Edgecumbe and Opotiki were also well supported. Mrs Withy kindly arranged Mrs Terry’s board and transport and Mrs Bowden on behalf of Manawahe W.L, made a fruit cake for competition for Federation funds. Edgecumbe applied for three long service badges and Waiotahi for one. All have been approved by the executive and sent forward. Institute badges are now in good supply and can be procured direct from Auckland. It is desired that all entries for the Robert Young cup be sent in early. The Te Kaha Institute, which has been in recess for several years, has re-formed and two new Institutes have started, Nukuhou and Whangarua. As quite a lot of travelling has been done in connection with the coast Institutes, the Federation has decided to apply for the £lO Maori grant. Institute members who intend to visit Christchurch during the 1950 conference are advised to book board as soon as possible.'
The Dominion Federation has for sale Xmas cards proceeds to go towards Headquarters building fund. Mrs McCalllon, president, attended the Dominion Council meeting recently in place of Mrs Caverhill who was unable to go. Several efforts have been made to obtain the services of a dressmaking tutor without success so far but there is still prospect for the future.
