SPORTS NEWS AND COMMENT

Cricket

COMPETITION STARTS THIS : ' v WEEK-END . Senior competition games of the Whakatane Cricket Association are to commence on Sunday for the 1949-50 season with games at Taneatua and Edgecumbe. In either case they will be all-day games commencing in the morning. Taneatua is to meet Waimana at Taneatua while at Edgecumbe Te Teko will meet Edgecumbe on the latter’s home ground. Whakatane P. and T. are to have the bye. The present-indications are that cricket is going ahead in the Bay of Plenty and in the Whakatane Association more younger players are taking an interest in the game. However, the Association’s competition has been weakened by the fact that games are to be played on Sunday, with the result that they have lost the United Club, which is unable to field a team on that day. However United has arranged games with outside clubs and meeting outside talent it has raised the standard of play most of their players and they must be considered this year as a very strong combination. Tomorrow they will travel to play Putaruru at Putaruru in a one day match. WEEK-END TEAMS The Edgecumbe cricket team to meet Galatea at Edgecumbe on Sunday will be selected from the following, all players to be on the ground at 9 a.m.:— R. Watson, E. and K. Tunnicliffe, L.
